    Asus VG248QE Review 144hz 3D Vision 2+Lightboost Gaming Monitor

All testing done using an i1 Display Pro Colorimeter (a colorimeter measures the colours, contrast, brightness, gamma, ect), basICColor 5 (used to measure the color presets and for ICC profiling), HCFR (software used to measure the default colours). I used the dual-link DVI input+cord to connect the VG248QE to my PC.

PixerPixAn's (free software) Chase, Streaky Pictures and Flag test were all used to test the pixel response times

Borderlands 2 (PC), Uncharted 3 (PS3), Gears of War: Judgement (360), Halo 4 (360), Dirt 3 (PC), Battlefield 3 (PC), Left 4 Dead 2 (PC), Painkiller: Hell & Damnation (PC), and Resident Evil: 4 (360) were all used to test the pixel response times.

LCD monitor test images test patterns from Lagom were used to test the colors along with tons of photos from wallpapers wide.

3D Movies used to check for cross-talk: Tron: Legacy, Thor, Fright Night 3D, Tintin and Priest

    Input Lag

Currently on PRAD has the necessary equipment to properly test monitors signal delay (input lag) and pixel response times accurately. PRAD's review will be available to the public on June 10th, 2013.

    http://www.prad.de/new/monitore/test...s-vg248qe.html

PRAD measured a signal delay of 1.6ms and 3.4ms pixel response time average at 60hz using the Trace Free 60 setting. There are many 1920x1080 IPS/PLS panels with similar signal delays and slightly pixel response time averages (5-10ms typically). Setting the Trace Free to 80 further improves the pixel response times, however PRAD only tested Trace Free 60 in their review.

The VG248QE won't break any records in terms of its 60hz performance, but it is still essentially delay free and can be used for competitive console gaming, however I would suggest that competitive console gamers get an IPS/PLS panel such as the Eizo EV2336 or Asus VG23AH for competitive console gaming since they also have negligible input lag and very little ghosting.

At 144hz PRAD measured a 0.7ms signal delay and 1.7ms pixel response time average using the Trace Free 100 setting...I'm not sure why they chose to only post the Trace Free 100 results because they recommend using the Trace Free 40 setting at 144hz.

Subjectively, at 60hz the VG248QE feels very similar to my Samsung 700NF CRT. When Lightboost/3D, 120hz and 144hz are enabled the Asus feels even more responsive vs. my CRT.

    Legend:
Blue=Suitable For ALL Enthusiast CRT & 120hz Users
Purple=Suitable For Some Enthusiast & ALL Regular Gamers
Orange=Not Suitable for Enthusiast Gamers & Some Regular Gamers
Red=Not Suitable for Enthusiast or Regular Gamers: CASUAL GAMERS ONLY

    Asus VG248QE: Signal Delay=1.6ms @60hz and 0.7ms @144hz measured by PRAD
Dell U2713H Game Mode: 14ms (Measured by PC Monitors Info)
Dell U2713H: 30ms signal delay measured by PRAD
    ViewSonic VX2770SMH-LED: 4-5ms
Asus PB278Q: 17.8ms signal delay measured by PRAD
    Dell S2740L: Negligible
    Asus VG23AH: <5ms

    CrossOver 2720MDP Gold: 12-14ms
Samsung S27A850D: 13.6ms signal delay measured by PRAD

    Samsung S23A700D: 12-13ms @120hz
    BenQ XL2420T: 3ms @120hz
    Asus VG236H: 3ms @120hz

Asus PA238Q: 2.2ms signal delay measured by PRAD
    Samsung S27A950D: 13ms @120hz

    60hz Ghosting

All images taken with the same camera settings from the free motion testing program, PixerPixAn. Trace Free 100 suffers from extreme overshoot ghosting, do not use Trace Free 100!

Trace Free 80 speeds up the pixel response times, thus reducing color streaking and smearing

Trace Free 60 (Default) is a bit slower than 80

Trace Free 40 is slightly slower than the higher settings but does not overshoot.

    CrossOver 2720MDP S-IPS

Like every other Asus monitor, the VG248QE is set to the Trace Free 60 by default. The VG248QE is the 2nd fastest 60hz monitor I have reviewed, the Samsung S23A700D (Faster) defeats the VG248QE since it streaks tincy bit less and does not overshoot.

The Trace Free 60 setting overshoots and streaks very slightly, but for the most part the VG248QE's motion artifacts are very minimal, and it is still faster than any IPS/PLS and VA panel at 60hz.

I found Trace Free 80 to be the best overall setting since it almost completely eliminates the monitor color streaking, however, Trace Free 80 does overshoot a bit during light on light color transitions such as light grays on white backgrounds.

Usually I can't stand overshoot...so why am I recommending Trace Free 80? Because the overshoot remains minimal and I only saw it when dragging windows around the desktop and in console games with motion blur such as Gears of War Judgment.

Trace Free 40 does not overshoot, but it does streak slightly more than the higher settings. The streaking remains very minimal, so the VG248QE still gets to keep it's 2nd fastest title.

    -Nvidia Graphics Card Required
-Not recommended unless one can output 100fps+ consistently
-My GPU recommendation: GTX 670, GTX 680, GTX TITAN or two of each

Lightboost (Nvidia 3D Vision 2) TN panels have strobing back-lights meant to reduce the cross-talk in 3D, however this strobing back-light technology works for 2D use and greatly reduces motion blur allowing Lightboost capable monitors to be 95% as blur free as a CRT! Sounds fantastic right? Lightboost monitors, like CRT's with their phosphor trailing is not without its pit falls.

The VG248QE suffers from some overshoot when Lightboost is enabled, but the LCD sample-and-hold motion blur is essentially eliminated thus making camera movement and motion very clear.

Mainly I played BF3, L4D2 and Pain Killer: Hell & Damnation with Lighboost enabled since my Galaxy GTX 670 4GB can out put relatively stable, high fps, especially in L4D2 and Pain Killer. I never saw any Lightboost ghosting (overshoot) when gaming however, but the lightboost overshoot was very obvious in PixerPixAn.

Gamers after the clearest motion performance will love the Asus VG248QE...but like me, may be put off by the awful Lightboost color presets which are awful even by TN panel standards. After calibration the color accuracy is greatly improved but the black levels remain terrible, so dark scenes in games will always look quite washed out.

    144hz Ghosting

At 144hz, Trace Free 40 provides the best performance since it is free from overshoot and barely streaks. Streaking was visible when using motion testing programs like PixerPixAn when objects would move across the screen at lightning speeds. Lower Trace Free settings (0/20) streak and smear a bit more while higher settings (60/80/100) streak and smear a bit less, but overshoot.

Only extremely fast camera movements should produce streaking in games. I suspect only twitch gamers who play with cranked sensitivity and high mouse dpi settings will be able to make the VG248QE streak.

Non-twitch gamers will enjoy a very smooth, delay and streak free gaming experience.

    Color Presets

Out of the box the Asus is set to the Standard mode which is one of the 6 Color Presets available. The Standard mode offers the best colors. Initially preset measurements were pretty bad: I measured a contrast ratio of 400-700:1 in all of the modes. Blacks were grayish and the colors looked severely washed out, so, I reset the monitor in the OSD. Resetting the display greatly improved the colors, which I measured with my i1 display pro colorimeter. The graph above contains all of my color preset measurements as well as my evaluations.

The Standard Mode is the best @60/120/144hz while the other modes have either obviously over-saturated or washed out colors.

Both the Scenery and Theater mode offer over-saturated colors resulting in sun burnt/overly tanned skins tones, extra color vibrancy and black crush which results in a loss of shadow detail.

sRGB Mode looks awful so I will not waste any more words.

Night View Mode reduces the contrast and gamma to make all shadow details visible, while it does do what it is supposed to it still looks horrible. The colors are severely washed out due to the low average gamma and the contrast is reduced resulting in grayish blacks.

The Lightboost/3D colors are also quite mediocre due to the very low contrast (<500:1) and very strong blue tint caused by the very high color temperature (8700K). The VG248QE has the worst 3D/Lightboost mode colors out of all the 3D monitors I have reviewed. The BenQ XL2420T (click here) and Asus VG236H also had quite poor contrast by default in their 3D modes but raising the contrast greatly improved the contrast/black levels on both the XL2420T and VG236H. Both the XL2420T and VG236H had better default color accuracy to.

The contrast needs to be reduced to get rid of the white+light shade color bleaching when in Lightboost/3D mode on the VG248QE, so, there is no way to improve the very poor contrast.

    Calibrated Image Quality

Calibration is required to fix the Asus VG248QE's gamma @144hz since the default gamma is too low by default. An ICC profile improves the color significantly @144hz since the ICC profile forces 2.2 gamma and improves color saturation. At 60hz only minor adjustments of the RGB values were required to improve the color accuracy since the average gamma at 60hz is higher vs. 120-144hz.

Both the 60hz and 144hz 2D results are quite similar except for the black levels which are slightly higher at 144hz and slightly below average. The 60hz black levels are typical for a TN panel, but still good.

Calibration brings dramatic improvements to the mediocre Lightboost Colors. The blue tint is fixed as is the gamma but the colors still appear washed out and the blacks grayish due to the very low Lightboost contrast ratio.

    Screen Uniformity

144hz Lightboost Off by thedeepinthesky, on Flickr
Lightboost On by thedeepinthesky, on Flickr

When Lightboost is disabled the Asus VG248QE's blacks look deep for a non-VA panel and the screen uniformity is excellent since there is no back-light bleeding or obvious uniformity issues.

Marlon Brando brilliantly surmises my thoughts about the VG248QE's high black level and screen uniformity when Lightboost is enabled
