My theory:

Some of this is part of the latest shift in communication and how people prioritize information. When we went from Oral tradition to the book we went from just parts of a community to smarter individuals.

I think it's noticeable the electronic communication age is bringing us all closer together. The odd result I think is people are behaving almost more like their ancestors from the Oral Tradition and acting more like small units of the community then smarter individual literary people. It doesn't matter if they're texting as well as talking or what else they're doing on their smart phones. I think the effect is still similar.

I don't think this makes them bad people for it. They just rely on the digital connection to their community rather then read thoughtful books and cultivate their own wisdom and knowledge. If they do read it's because it's the latest book their Friends List recommends like fucking Twilight.

well yeah thats obvious, but its scar to think, if you notice, a lot of the questions were asked to the same people....and they just didn't know anytime.

Like....that is disturbing to not know THAT much or to have any idea how to problem solve.

It is sad. It's very sad. I went to the worse school in my area. From academics to crime, my high school is notorious. I didn't think it was that bad because I went there and got good grades and I was actually there so what was going on didn't seem to be a big deal, seemed normal. In fact I was under the impression I was really smart for the longest time. Then I made friends that had attended better schools and quickly found out that I'm average at best. Average at best for my area. And my area is shiiiiitttyyy. So now I wonder, with the education I had available to me, how I stack up against people who grew up in nicer neighborhoods. And it really sucks to think that I had a shit start right from the get go.

I guess I could have transferred to a better school and made due with figuring out a way to get to and from. But still. Life can be a harsh mistress sometimes. Anyways, my girl went to the best school around this area and she has no problem reminding me every now and then. And sometimes it just flat out shows.

I know America is in a bad position financially but I would fully support some drastic action being taken to repair our education system. It's pathetic. I would say the two biggest problems in my school were the teachers and lack of a strong punishment system.

I agree...hell, i went to a Long Island catholic school for HS...I graduated number 74 out of 450 kids in terms of GPA. I remember hearing that and thinking...i have an 85 average...how the FUCK is that top 25%?
