    Gas Fracking: Canadian Fire Water?

Okay so some people where I live are circulating a petition to Ban gas fracking. Or specifically horizontal hydraulic fracking.

So I decided to look into it and found this video on YouTube. I'm not sure what to make of it.

It certainly seems to thoroughly fuck the environment.

According to one of the plaintiffs (Encana)...

Since becoming aware of Ms. Ernst's concerns, Encana has offered to test her water well on a number of occasions. To date, Encana has been unable to obtain Ms. Ernst's cooperation in order to perform the offered testing on her property.
Encana co-operated fully with both Alberta Environment and ARC and provided them with all available information. When the investigation was completed in January 2008, Alberta Environment released a report showing the water wells were not affected by CBM (coal bed methane) development. Rather, the quality issues were predominantly due to naturally occurring methane, poor water well construction and maintenance issues.

The courts also told this lady to go back and fix her statement of claim...

At a Court Motion in Drumheller, Alberta, Court of Queen's Bench Justice Barbara Veldhuis ruled that Ms. Ernst's 257 paragraph Claim was "verbose, repetitive, inflammatory, improper and not in keeping with the spirit of the Alberta Rules of Court." Justice Veldhuis ordered Ms. Ernst's lawyers (within 60 days), to file a new Claim that is succinct, efficient, proper and warned them to be careful to plead only the facts of the Plaintiff's Claim - not law and argument.

Interesting. I've also seen the popular video clip from GasLand that was debunked in a similar way.

I've read comments that this guy's well was dug into a methane pocket.

I can imagine that maybe Fracking affects a pre-existing problem like this, but I'm not sure the whole problem is caused by the gas company.

So the other concern is the chemicals shoved into the ground during this process. Yet, Alberta companies like EnCana have apparently come up with Propane Gel Fracking so that doesn't require tons of water. Seems like a messy process but I'm not yet ready to sign on to banning it.

Propane Gel Fracking is really cool. The propane is pumped down the hole in gel form and fractures the formation to release the gasses. Then the propane is gassified and all of it is pumped back to the surface with the gas.

I know a guy who started one of the first companies to do this. He's a kagillionaire now.
